I'm getting into Frida (Frida Kahlo, that is; that's her awesome quote, above). It all started with this:
This beautiful, beautiful little Frida doll from Cara Carmina. Cara, who lives in Montreal but hails from Mexico, has a whole range of really sweet Frida dolls going on right now in her shop, and this one is my favorite. First of all, she's the very most perfect blue. And she has the most perfect little flowers, including yellow ones, which just makes sense to me. And lastly, in addition to her trademark eyebrows and ever-so-sweet Cara Carmina face, she has the words "te amo" embroidered on her. (I love you too, little bitty Frida!)
another sweet Frida from Cara Carmina
So, after reading up about Frida Kahlo herself (and as with us all, there are inspiring and not-so-inspiring moments), I did some looking for other creative interpretations on etsy...would you care to see?
Yay!
Baby shoes made from the Alexander Henry Frida fabric, from Bella Baby Gifts...
"la muerta" print, by the fabulous Junker Jane...
"Frida" bracelet, by sparrow...
"Little Frida" peg doll, by little cocolala...
"Mexican Love Song" handspun yarn, by UrbanGypZ...
"Dos Fridas," a print by the wonderful Danita...
"Frida" necklace, by luxeDeluxe...
...and sweet, sweet handmade pillow, from Hilbert Sisters...
Fun, huh?! I'm going to have to go to the local Mexican folk art bazaar to see what else I can find...The colors there are so vibrant and cheerful--I love it there. Plus, it's a proven fact (I proved it) that a nice warm churro is good for the soul.
Have a lovely, colorful, and happy day, my dears. Cheers!
xoxox.
Edit: Lovely Cate reminded me in the comments of this wonderful Frida Kahlo birthday party that is worth taking another look at, even if you seen it before...Here is my post on it, and here are more pictures at Erika's flickr set. Go see--it's really lovely and will make you smile!
I once saw photos of the most amazing Frida birthday party on Flickr. Here's the link if you're interested

Hi Amy - I was doing a little internet research for my next trip back to Portland, looking for Japanese craft books at my favorite NW Asian marketplace, Uwajimaya, when I landed (happily!) here at your blog. I'll be visiting often for good San Diego finds (I do live here afterall) and to hear your sparkling "voice" for creative inspiration. Thank you.

oh my, I LOVE Danita's print.
There was a big Frida show at SFMOMA here a couple years ago, the Two Fridas painting actually made me cry -- so moving and amazing.
