Just popping in with a quick idea...(Nothing earth-shattering, mind you, but it's so rare that I have good ideas that it's really cause for celebration in these parts.)
So, you know how some people have those baskets at the bottom of the stairs for everyone to put their stuff in that needs to go up? It's a good idea, but in our house, you know who always ends up hauling that basket upstairs, where it then sits ignored for at least 2 or 3 days? Yes, it's me. Every bleepin' time.
Here's my inspired idea, brought to you directly from the Target $1 bins: a separate, color-coded basket for each member of the family! It works like a charm, I'm telling you. At a glance, you can tell who's pulling their weight, and who isn't! And even when there is stuff in them, it looks like you are in the process of cleaning up, not just moving junk from the family room floor to the stairs. There's thought involved. And it's colorful--which is always a bonus, in my book.
So, I don't know, if you have kids + stairs, you might want to give it a try. (Chez Hanson, it's a case of "so far, so good.") At any rate, it certainly is a fine, very inexpensive excuse to rush to Target, pronto.
(My apologies to my non-Stateside readers! Target is a lovely thing, here, and I don't know a single mom or homeowner who doesn't adore it. But little colored baskets of any kind would do, right?)
Have a great one, sweet friends!
xoxox.
Duh... why didn't I think of that?! Good idea! I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!

Love it! We're using the exact same ones as personal baskets for all the winter accessories that come with January in Massachusetts -- each one holds mittens, hats, balaclavas, you name it, for each member of the family! Makes getting out in the morning much easier...

I saw those baskets at target and thought "hmmm..those are great colors and look useful" but I didn't buy any. now I will.
you also posted about your home - and mentioned the IKEA cabinets. those red cabinets just went immediately to the top of my WANT list when shopping at IKEA :) They're adorable, I mean, stylish!

A superidea. But in our house it doesn´t work to put them in the stair because we are six in the family, the stair is turning on its fourth step and we have a big dog who will run up and down and make them fall down. So I have to think of some other way to do it...Maybe hang them on the wall...or something. (Sorry for my english. :))

This is a brilliant idea! I don't have stairs but if I did, I'd do somethng like this! But I wonder if I can get baskets like that from somewhere else.
A non-stateside reader :)

You know that my eyes didn't go to the basket, but to the book. I read all of the Madeleine L'Engle was one of my favorites as a kid and I read A Wrinkle in Time, A Swiftly Tilting Planet and Many Waters to Cameron and Max. They loved the first two and lost interest with Many Waters. I'm assuming that Olivia is reading A Swiftly Tilting Planet, I hope she enjoys it as much as I did.
By the way...the day after you wore one black and one brown shoe, I looked down to see that I had on one blue and one white running shoe. We can lose our minds together.
